Uganda Welcomes First Female Rhino Baby in 30 Years

Horns up! It’s a girl!

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Uganda is celebrating the historic birth of the country’s first female rhino in 30 years. This is the second time mother “Nandi” has made history, as she gave birth in June 2009 to Uganda’s very first calf – named Obama – following the regional extinction of the species in 1982.

The new arrival is the fourth baby rhino born at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, after Obama, Augustus, and Justice.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Rhino Fund Uganda are offering the opportunity to name the new baby, with bids starting at USD $3,000 for the privilege. Contact the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary here for details.

More babies are on the way, as two of Ziwa’s female rhinos are expected to give birth soon.

Third Baby Rhino Born in Uganda After 25+ Years of Regional Extinction!

Good news from Uganda: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has welcomed a third baby rhino!

2010 is off to a promising start at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where a white rhino calf was born on January 2 – the third baby rhino following more than 25 years of regional extinction.

Angie Genade, Executive Director of Rhino Fund Uganda, said via New Vision that there are now a total of nine rhinos residing at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

We are excited about the birth and the prospects it will bring to the sanctuary.

We have three adult males and three females as well as two baby males born last year.

2009: Historic year for Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

In 2009′s historic rhino birth at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the first baby rhino was named Obama, after U.S. President Barack Obama. The second calf was also a male, Augustu (pictured above).

The naming of this baby New Year rhino will reportedly be a fundraising event for the sanctuary.

… the naming will likely to be put out for bid with corporate entities or individuals being able to support the conservation and breeding efforts on Ziwa with a substantial cash boost, against having their chosen name attached to the latest little rhino.

Rhinos in Uganda

Southern white rhinos (Ceratotherium simum) have been extinct in Uganda since 1982, when the last one was murdered by poachers. Sadly, organized rhino poaching syndicates are still operating throughout Africa, fueled and funded by insatiable Asian demands (notably China and Vietnam) for illegal rhino horn.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 1997 to reintroduce the rhinoceros into Uganda. The rhinos are protected by an electric fence that surrounds the sanctuary, as well as rangers and askaris who are with the rhinos 24 hours day.

Uganda’s Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Names Baby Rhino ‘Obama’

At the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the first baby White Rhino born in Uganda after 28 years has been named Obama, after the U.S. President!

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary says baby Obama already has a personality and sense of humor all his own:

His mouth is constantly open making funny sounds trying to figure out all the sounds he can make.

He runs and jumps around all the time that he is not sleeping or feeding. He seems to be always busy playing his own imaginary games and just seems soooo happy to be around. Then, like all babies, he gets tired and takes a nap.

First Baby Rhino Born in Uganda in 28 Years at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary!

After being regionally extinct for 28 years, the first baby White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum) has been born in Uganda!

Although the gender of the baby is not yet known, proposed names include “Michelle” and “Obama.”

This historical event has occurred at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, in the Nakasongola district just off the Gulu highway between Kampala and Murchison Falls.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was created to reintroduce rhinoceros to Uganda.

Established in 1997, and currently home to the only wild rhinos in Uganda, Ziwa’s long term goal is to build a sustainable rhino population and relocate rhinos back to their original habitat in Uganda’s protected areas.
