In October 2011, the Vietnamese Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) was declared extinct, and it was in July 2006 that the presumed extinction of the Western black rhino (Diceros bicornis longipes) was reported.

According to this year’s assessment from the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM, Diceros bicornis longipes is now gone forever.

Lack of political will

Both extinctions were preventable.

The WWF report “Extinction of the Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus)” indicated that there was a glaring lack of political will and very little, if any, accountability for the protection of this critically endangered species. (The world’s last Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus was found shot with her horn missing.)

Sadly, it is not at all surprising that the recently updated Diceros bicornis longipes page on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM reads as follows:

Given the wildlife poaching taking place, lack of political will and conservation effort by Cameroon conservation authorities in the past, and increasing illegal demand for rhino horn and associated increased commercial rhino poaching in other range states, it is highly probable that this subspecies is now extinct.

Black rhinos have been classified as Critically Endangered since 1996, following an Endangered listing for at least ten years.

Between 1970 and 1993, the demand for rhino horn decimated the black rhino population from around 65,000 to fewer than 2,500.

Thanks to conservation efforts and the ban on rhino horn trade, there are now around 4,860 black rhinos, comprised of three subspecies:

South-western black rhino (Diceros bicornis bicornis)

Eastern black rhino (Diceros bicornis michaeli)

South-central black rhino (Diceros bicornis minor)

It is barely a week since the extinction of the Javan rhino subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) was confirmed, and already there is troubling news about the remaining Javan rhinos.

There may be just a handful of females among the world’s last population of Javan rhinos (Rhinoceros sondaicus sondaicus), which are found only in Indonesia.

According to The Jakarta Globe, camera traps recorded 17 rhinos this year and only four were females.

The rhinos were found in the eastern half of Ujung Kulon National Park.

Video of Javan rhino and calf:

Recently, the video cameras were moved to the western half of the park, which is “more remote”.

It is hoped that additional female Javan rhinos will be found; the results could be known in a few weeks.

Learn more about the extinction of the Javan rhino in Vietnam at “Gone Forever: Javan Rhino Declared Extinct in Vietnam“.

‘Operation Javan Rhino’

However, there is hope for Javan rhinos in Indonesia.

The International Rhino Foundation (IRF) along with an international team of partners, is working to expand the useable habitat for Javan rhinos in UKNP by creating the 4,000 hectare Javan Rhino Study and Conservation Area (JRSCA).

We are doing this by constructing small bridges, an electric fence, and a patrol road; eradicating invasive species which have taken over a good portion of the habitat; planting rhino food plants; providing a water supply and saltlick; and constructing additional guard posts. The continued survival of the Javan rhino depends on their population increasing in numbers as rapidly as possible, and in spreading the population out so that ‘all the eggs are not in one basket’.

Today, I am pleased to note that Shrub Monkey has bestowed “Cunt of the Day” status upon the vile thugs who are responsible for the extinction of the Javan rhino in Vietnam.

Shrub Monkey’s “Cunt of the Day” (@cuntoftheday) currently has 47,957 followers on Twitter.

Shrub Monkey tweeted: “Rhino poachers who have hunted the Javan rhino to extinction in Vietnam are Cunts of the Day. A proud day for humanity.”

Here is an excerpt from today’s Shrub Monkey blog:

It is high time that poachers got another mention on these pages as they really are a bunch of indefensible cunts. We learn today that the Javan rhino has been poached to extinction in Vietnam. Living in a protected area was not enough for the few remaining rhinos who were illegaly hunted for their horns. This leaves a population of about 50 Javan rhinos in Indonesia.

Poachers are flat out cunts and no excuses about coming from a poor country will cut it. The extinction of the Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) in Vietnam is now confirmed, according to WWF and the International Rhino Foundation (IRF).

A new report released by WWF concludes that Vietnam’s last rhino was a victim of the illegal rhino horn trade.

Poaching was identified as the cause of the extinction of the subspecies; the last individual was shot in the leg, which probably caused its death, and the horn had been removed.

The female rhino’s body was found in Cat Tien National Park on April 29th, 2010. It is estimated that she died in late January or early February.

DNA analyses conducted at Queen’s University, Canada, determined that the dung samples collected during a 2009/2010 WWF survey belonged to one rhino.

Sadly, the samples matched those taken from the dead rhino.

Lack of political will

Vietnam’s tiny rhino population struggled against several formidable obstacles, including the traditional medicine trade, questionable government funding decisions, and habitat loss.

However, it seems the impact of these obstacles could have been lessened, if only the recommended conservation programs had been implemented and supported by the relevant authorities within Vietnam.

The report indicated that there was a glaring lack of political will and very little, if any, accountability for the protection of this critically endangered species.

Demand for traditional ‘medicines’

WWF noted that Vietnam’s “uncontrolled illegal wildlife trade” and “inadequate protection” of habitat led to the extinction of the country’s rhinos.

Vietnam is facing an extinction crisis due to the largely uncontrolled illegal wildlife trade and rampant, ubiquitous poaching of wildlife. Current protected area management practices and conservation interventions have proved inadequate for dealing with this threat. The extinction of the Javan rhinoceros from Vietnam is a direct result of this inadequate protection and protected area management from all parties involved in its conservation.

The “increasing demand for wildlife in the traditional medicine trade in Vietnam, China and other parts of Asia” continues to decimate Southeast Asia’s wildlife populations.

Rhino horn is still a sought-after ingredient for traditional Chinese medicine, despite the fact it has been rigorously analyzed and contains no medicinal properties. Earlier this year, the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine and TCM educators spoke out against the continued use of rhino horn.

Indeed, it is the thriving trade in traditional “medicines” made from animal parts which is responsible for killing the world’s last Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus.

Photo: © WWF-Greater Mekong

Habitat loss

It was also revealed that the Vietnamese government focused its funding on “infrastructure development” and demonstrated “insufficient political support” for protecting its critically endangered rhino population.

There was insufficient political support to secure adequate habitat, prevent encroachment, and protect the remaining rhinoceros from hunting. Although Cat Tien National Park is a relatively well funded protected area, as is typical for National Parks in Vietnam a much greater proportion of government funding is spent on activities such as infrastructure development, than on addressing threats to the protected area.

The range of the Javan rhino in Vietnam decreased significantly from 75,000ha in 1988 to just 6,500ha by 2010. Urban development, conversion to agricultural land, park encroachment by settlers, and explosive human population growth proved to be ongoing issues that were never adequately addressed.

Additionally, there was “little or no accountability” within Vietnam’s current protected area management system, which includes rangers, their managers, and protected area managers.

Photo: © WWF-Greater Mekong

‘Conservation failure’

Although once thought to be extinct, Vietnam’s Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus was rediscovered in 1988.

The small population consisted of perhaps a dozen rhinos. Sufficient habitat was available and it was hoped that these rhinos would make a recovery similar to the Southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum) and the greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis ) – both of which were on the brink of extinction 100 years ago.

However, by 2006, probably only three Javan rhinos remained in Vietnam. Despite years of valid recommendations from conservation groups, implementation and accountability were both lacking in Cat Tien National Park.

The extinction of the Javan rhinoceros in Vietnam is a major conservation failure.

Three subspecies of Javan rhino once existed. Rhinoceros sondaicus inermis, which formerly occurred in northeastern India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, is already extinct.

Today, only one subspecies of Javan rhino remains: Fewer than 50 Rhinoceros sondaicus sondaicus are still surviving in Indonesia’s Ujung Kulon National Park.

Indonesia’s Ujung Kulon Park has lost another of its critically endangered Javan rhinos.

Because the rhino’s horn was intact, the rhino is likely to have died from natural causes. The male rhino, believed to be about 30 years of age, was found dead in a river. Javan rhinos have a life span of 30 – 45 years.

Indonesian Rhino Foundation head Widodo Ramono said via The Jakarta Globe that fewer than 50 Javan rhinos remain in Ujung Kulon, the last known location of this critically endangered species (Rhinoceros sondaicus).

We have 40 to 50 rhinos here now. If two die, that’s four percent of the population.

There were no signs it had been killed by poachers as its horn was intact. It might have died of old age or illness. We’re still investigating the cause of death and checking if there are other carcasses in the area.

Plans are under way to establish a second habitat for Indonesia’s Javan rhinos, in hopes of encouraging breeding and expanding the population.

A Javan rhino subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) – with a population of fewer than five individuals – hangs by a thread in Vietnam. Although these rhinos have not been seen by wildlife researchers for years – and the last known photo was taken by a camera trap, possibly in 2006 – poachers still managed to kill one and hack off the horn.

Superstitions about rhino horn driving rhinos to the edge of extinction

Javan rhinos – like all rhino species – are under tremendous threat from illegal killing, fueled by demand for rhino horn in east and southeast Asia. The latest research via the IUCN/SSC and TRAFFIC found that most rhino horn leaving Africa is destined for end-use markets in China and Vietnam.

Persistent superstitions in these regions attribute “healing powers” to rhino horn, despite the fact scientific analysis has confirmed rhino horn has no medicinal effect on humans.

Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam, home to the one of the world’s rarest mammals, is now the site of a heinous environmental crime: The murder of one of the world’s last Javan rhinos for its horn.

Javan rhino: One of the world’s rarest mammals

The population of this Javan rhino subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) is believed to be only around five individuals – and possibly fewer – giving it the unfortunate distinction of being one of the rarest mammals on earth.

According to published reports, the Javan rhino’s decayed body was found on April 29 by park rangers.

A team of rangers found the rhino’s carcass April 29 inside Cat Tien National Park in Dong Nai province, said park official Bach Thanh Hai. It had already fully decayed, and authorities believe it could have died more than three months ago, he said.

A WWF Javan rhino population study confirmed late last year that Javan rhinos were still surviving in Vietnam. The survey’s purpose was to gather genetic data in order to develop a local conservation management strategy, as these rhinos are facing multiple threats, including illegal settlers and the construction of a power plant.

Around 60 Javan rhinos (Rhinoceros sondaicus) of a different subspecies are found in Indonesia.

Rhino populations worldwide have been devastated by the demand for rhino horn in China and Vietnam. Primitive cultural superstitions about rhino horn still persist in these regions, where rhino horn is considered to be a “medicine” for common ailments – despite the fact that scientific analysis has confirmed rhino horn has no medicinal effects on humans.

Dung-sniffing dogs have confirmed that Javan rhinos are indeed still surviving in Vietnam.

The WWF survey of Vietnam’s Javan rhino population is off to a promising start: Two dung piles and recent footprints!

WWF biologists Sarah Brook and Simon Mahood have announced via the survey project’s blog – Rhinomania – that Javan rhino dung and footprints have been found in Vietnam.

In five days of searching we found two dung piles, both rather old.

At the wallows, rhino footprints were often clearly visible. Ageing the footprints is fraught with difficulty, but the lack of fallen leaves in these prints indicate that they were made very recently.

Those footprints led out of a wallow where a rhino had been moving around … Again, there is no debris in the areas flattened by the rhino, this and the cloudiness of the water where the rhino has been moving around indicated to us that the rhino had been here recently, perhaps as recently as the night before.

Just a handful of Javan rhinos left in Vietnam

It is estimated that there are no more than five individuals of this rare Javan rhino subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) still surviving in Vietnam.

The purpose of the Javan rhino population study is to gather urgently needed genetic data in order to develop a local conservation management strategy for these critically endangered mammals. According to WWF, data about these shy and elusive creatures will be compiled using Javan rhino dung analysis.

The project is being carried out by the WWF, Forest Protection Department, Cat Tien National Park, and international rhino experts.

A comprehensive survey to gather genetic data about the last Javan rhino population in Vietnam kicks off in November 2009.

WWF announced earlier this week that a comprehensive survey of Cat Tien’s Javan rhino population will begin next month and continue until April 2010. The purpose of the study is to gather urgently needed genetic data in order to develop a local conservation management strategy for these critically endangered mammals.

It is estimated that there no more than five individuals of this rare Javan rhino subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) still surviving in Vietnam’s Cat Tien National Park.

Data from dung

According to WWF, data about these shy and elusive creatures will be compiled using Javan rhino dung analysis.

Because Javan rhino dung is almost as difficult to locate as a Javan rhino, tracking dogs from the U.S. – which are specially trained to locate Javan rhino dung – will be deployed for the project. Dung samples will be sent to Queen’s University in Canada and the Zoological Society of London for analysis to reveal a hormone profile.

Project collaboration

Joining the WWF on the Javan rhino population survey are the Forest Protection Department, Cat Tien National Park, and international rhino experts.

The team is reportedly looking to the government of Vietnam for support, but are likely to face a tough obstacle: Plans to build a power plant at the edge of Javan rhino habitat have unfortunately been approved by the Lam Dong administration.

In addition to the Javan rhino subspecies, Vietnam’s Cat Tien National Park is home to 40 species on the IUCN Red List.

A recent study has revealed that the critically endangered Javan rhino faces even more threats than previously thought.

Today, only around 50 Javan rhinos (Rhinoceros sondaicus) remain inside Indonesia’s Ujung Kulon National Park. And, according to the latest study by the Indonesian Rhino Foundation (YABI), now these rhinos can add food shortages, water scarcity, and the effects of climate change to an already overwhelming list of threats facing this isolated population.

Ujung Kulon’s rhino population is currently experiencing a food shortage. A drastic reduction in the rhinos’ food source has been caused by the invasion of Langkap (Arenga Obtusifolia), a palm species. The rhinos feed on lower vegetation, while the tall Langkap blocks the sunlight and impedes the growth of plants below.

Water issues are also projected for the rhinos’ habitat. Widodo Ramono, a senior scientist at the YABI, explained that anticipated climate change issues pose serious water-related problems for the lowland forest-dwelling Javan rhino. Water scarcity in the rhinos’ habitat would dry out the wallows that the rhino depends on for cooling and seeking relief from the sun and insects – and rising sea levels could have additional consequences.

More recent trends in climate change suggest a variation in seasonal rainfall. The water scarcity may restrict the rhinos’ movement … However, the expected sea level rises because of climate change could overwhelm its prime habitat which would threaten the rhinos.

The study was carried out as part of the plan to establish a second habitat for the critically endangered Javan rhino.

(A tiny population of the rare Javan rhino subspecies Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus still survives in Vietnam. The last 3 – 5 of these shy creatures live in Cat Tien National Park, where plans to build a power plant at the edge of their habitat have been approved, pushing this small Javan rhino subspecies even closer to becoming extinct.)

Why is the Javan rhino so rare?

Javan rhino – like all species of rhino – have endured decades of ruthless slaughtering for their horn.

According to traditional Chinese superstition, the rhino’s horn is a cure for common ailments, such as fever. Despite widespread availability of cheap OTC remedies, there seems to be no end in sight for the demand for pricey, prestigious “ancient remedies.”

Tragically, these superstition-based demands are driving wild rhinos to extinction.

Inside Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam, a rare subspecies of the critically endangered Javan Rhino still survives. Once thought to be extinct, it is estimated that there are only 3 – 5 of these delicate creatures left in the world.

The rhinos in Cat Tien NP have endured ruthless slaughter for their horns and annihilation of their habitat. Now there is yet another threat to their tenuous chances of continued survival.

Plans to build a power plant at the edge of the rhinos’ habitat have been approved by the Lam Dong administration. The plant’s dam will be slightly less than two miles from the Javan Rhino reserve. An estimated 1,000 tons of explosives will be used for clearing forested areas near the reserve. Construction is expected to take three years. And even clean energy solutions – such as wind turbines – can have adverse affects on surrounding wildlife (and humans), if not properly sited.

Blasting the forest with explosives, shaking the ground with heavy construction equipment – no matter what “benefits” the end result is purported to have – seems like wildly inappropriate activity to be taking place at the edge of a National Park that is home to 40 species on the IUCN Red List.

According to wildlife experts expressing concern for the Javan Rhinos in Cat Tien at a conference in Dong Nai:

The animals are so busy trying to avoid humans that they do not reproduce, something at which they are not good at to begin with.

A “perfect storm” of habitat destruction

In addition to rampant poaching, this Vietnamese subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) of Javan Rhino has suffered some of the most extensive habitat loss of the five remaining rhino species.

Any one of these factors could wipe out a species – yet this rhino has endured a “perfect storm” of large-scale environmental disasters:

Agent orange (a defoliator) during the Vietnam War. Half of southern Vietnam’s mangroves and 14 percent of its hardwood forests were destroyed; bamboo and grassland areas have still not grown back.

Human settlements encroaching on the park. Resettlement has not been done as planned, resulting in continued exploitation of the forest

Expansion of commercial interests resulting in deforestation: The rhinos have been pushed into undesirable regions by illegal logging activities.

Poaching remains a threat in Cat Tien National Park

Unfortunately, the 40 species on the IUCN Red List in Cat Tien National Park are lucrative prey for poachers and locals who are hunting illegally.

Inside the park, forestry protection services find thousands of traps each month – set by local people.

Earlier this year, wardens discovered dozens of illegal wildlife shops in Lam Dong Province – which have apparently been operating unabated for many years.

Total Javan Rhino population: Less than 60

Besides this Vietnamese subspecies of Javan Rhino, there is an Indonesian subspecies (Rhinoceros sondaicus sondaicus).

Currently, the last 50 or so of the Indonesian subspecies are found in only one location – Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia, Indonesia. These rhinos are under constant guard by Rhino Protection Units. IRF says that translocation plans are in progress to establish a second population to ensure the survival of Javan Rhinos.

All five species of rhino are under threat of poaching for their horn, which fetches top dollar in the illegal wildlife markets of China and other parts of Asia. Despite scientific evidence which points to the contrary, cultural beliefs surrounding medicinal properties of the horn persist – resulting in a 90% decrease in overall rhino population since 1970.
