Wonderful news from Indonesia!

A bundle of joy could be arriving soon at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia’s Way Kambas National Park: Ratu is now just a few months away from giving birth!

The baby’s father is world-famous Andalas, who was born at the Cincinnati Zoo, and later moved to the 250-acre Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in 2007, where he resides with Ratu and two other females, Rosa and Bina.

This pregnancy is the third for Ratu, whose previous attempts unfortunately ended in early miscarriages. She has just completed her eleventh month; rhino pregnancies last 15 — 16 months.

Ratu is receiving a daily hormone supplement, which was also prescribed to Andalas’s mother, Emi, after she miscarried. The dosage and protocol is provided by Sumatran rhino expert Dr. Terri Roth, director of Cincinnati Zoo’s Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife and vice president for International Rhino Foundation’s Asia programs.

Weekly weigh-ins and regular ultrasound exams are administered to the mother-to-be by Dr. Dedi Candra.

Executive director of the International Rhino Foundation, Dr. Susie Ellis, is hopeful about Ratu’s pregnancy.

We’ve got fingers crossed that everything will continue to go well and that Ratu will deliver a healthy baby sometime in late spring or early summer. This is truly a dedicated team effort, not just with regard to managing a critical pregnancy, but also in terms of the round-the-clock effort to protect Indonesia’s last remaining wild Sumatran rhinos.

We couldn’t hope to accomplish either without the generous support we receive from concerned people all over the world.

Here’s Andalas nudging Ratu:

Sumatran rhinos face multiple threats

Sumatran rhinos are classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, with fewer than 200 individuals surviving in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Like all rhino species, the Sumatran rhino faces the ever-present danger of being killed for unproven rhino horn remedies.

Tragically, Vietnam’s rhino population was declared extinct last year. The last individual was shot and killed, thanks to wild claims of rhino horn’s magical curative properties — claims which actually have no scientific basis.

In addition to rhino horn myths, Sumatran rhinos are gravely threatened by the continued destruction of their tropical forest habitat. Particularly notorious is paper giant Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), which has even gone as far to include Javan rhinos in their greenwashing attempts.

Every Sumatran rhino birth — in the wild, in a zoo or in a special sanctuary — represents hope for the survival of this species, which runs the risk of going extinct by the end of this century.

How to help Sumatran rhinos

The International Rhino Foundation, through its on-the-ground partner, the Rhino Foundation of Indonesia, funds the operation of the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary and supports Rhino Protection Units that safeguard the last remaining wild populations of Sumatran and Javan rhinos.

There are fewer than 50 Javan rhinos left in the world and you can help protect them by supporting Operation Javan Rhino, a global partnership led by International Rhino Foundation and Save the Rhino International.

Javan rhinos at risk

With the recent extinction of the Javan rhino in Vietnam, there is only one population of Javan rhinos left on Earth.

All of them live in Ujung Kulon National Park on the island of Java, Indonesia.

The Javan rhino is at significant risk of extinction – one natural disaster or an introduced disease could be the end of this species forever.

But you can help prevent the extinction of Javan rhinos!

Operation Javan Rhino

Operation Javan Rhino is creating 4,000 hectares of expanded habitat for Javan rhinos in Ujung Kulon, to encourage population growth and establish a second “insurance” population of Javan rhinos at a separate site.

Here’s what Operation Javan Rhino is doing to make the new habitat suitable and safe for Javan rhinos:

Clearing the site for an electric fence and adjacent patrol road

Constructing a fence and small bridges

Planting rhino food plants and removing invasive species

Creating a water supply and salt-lick

Constructing new guard posts

Hiring and training more guards and other staff from local villages

Launching an education program for nearby communities

This immense project costs $650,000 – and $350,000 has already been raised. International Rhino Foundation and Save the Rhino International are asking for your help in raising the additional funds needed to prevent the extinction of the Javan rhino.

Please visit the International Rhino Foundation’s Operation Javan Rhino page to make your donation and learn more.

According to The Jakarta Globe, camera traps recorded 17 rhinos this year and only four were females.

The rhinos were found in the eastern half of Ujung Kulon National Park.

Video of Javan rhino and calf:

Recently, the video cameras were moved to the western half of the park, which is “more remote”.

It is hoped that additional female Javan rhinos will be found; the results could be known in a few weeks.

Learn more about the extinction of the Javan rhino in Vietnam at “Gone Forever: Javan Rhino Declared Extinct in Vietnam“.

‘Operation Javan Rhino’

However, there is hope for Javan rhinos in Indonesia.

The International Rhino Foundation (IRF) along with an international team of partners, is working to expand the useable habitat for Javan rhinos in UKNP by creating the 4,000 hectare Javan Rhino Study and Conservation Area (JRSCA).

We are doing this by constructing small bridges, an electric fence, and a patrol road; eradicating invasive species which have taken over a good portion of the habitat; planting rhino food plants; providing a water supply and saltlick; and constructing additional guard posts. The continued survival of the Javan rhino depends on their population increasing in numbers as rapidly as possible, and in spreading the population out so that ‘all the eggs are not in one basket’.

With World Rhino Day being celebrated on September 22nd, it seemed appropriate to dedicate the entire month to rhinos. And thanks to Australia-based Asian Rhino Project, the month is off to a terrific start!

Last Friday, an enthusiastic group of Asian Rhino Project volunteers descended upon Perth’s central business district and raised an impressive $1,000 at the Tin Shake fundraiser.

Event organizer Sophie Dentrinos is quite pleased with the results.

It was a great success despite some miserable weather, and we managed to raise $1000 for the rhinos!

The Asian Rhino Project has organized another event for World Rhino Day, Rock Climbing for Rhinos.

Thanks to efforts by Chishakwe Ranch in the South East Lowveld of Zimbabwe, children in the neighboring villages are learning about rhinos and creating posters for World Rhino Day.

World Rhino Day 2011 co-organizer Lisa-Jane Campbell of Chishakwe Ranch explains the importance of involving local communities in conservation efforts.

It has long been acknowledged that educating people living near game parks about the importance and value of wildlife and habitat is key to conservation efforts all over the world. Once local people feel that wildlife resources are part of their heritage, and as such benefit them, they are much more inclined to join in efforts to protect them; rather than being part of the problem when it comes to poaching. This is particularly the case in key species such as Rhino.

Chishakwe has been actively involved in creating a culture of conservation in neighboring village areas for a number of years, and works in two primary schools: Muvava and Uteke.

The education outreach project has been named Mangwana which means “Tomorrow” in Shona, reflecting the project’s forward-looking nature.

Between the two schools, the Mangwana project contributes to the education of approximately 1,000 children between the ages of six and 13.

World Rhino Day posters

In preparation for World Rhino Day, the students at Muvava and Uteke schools are creating posters using materials supplied by Chishakwe.

Some of their beautiful artwork is already on display on the World Rhino Day 2011 page (on Facebook®).

Education and awareness

The Mangwana project uses education and information to decrease poaching and animal deaths caused by persecution of certain species due to superstitions, as well as to improve standards of education and facilities at the schools.

Annual projects have been run and the children who are awarded best project win a day on safari at Chishakwe. This has proved to be immensely popular as a prize, and we are planning to extend the concept into three day bush camps to be held at Chishakwe.

In addition to World Rhino Day, a recent development is the involvement of more affluent high schools in Zimbabwe (and elsewhere in the world) with Muvava and Uteke. An exchange of ideas and sharing of materials will be facilitated online.

School projects have been ongoing and diverse.

Two years ago, we addressed the lack of chairs by co-operating with the community to make them and then creating a project where the children painted their own chair with an animal, its name and a few basic facts.

This year, the Chishakwe project was on the habitat created by a termite mound. The emphasis was on the extended life cycle of a termite mound and the fact that numerous animals could use the mound as a food source and a source of shelter – even after the termites had left. The children were able learn about a number of smaller species that occur around their village homes.

The termite mound projects made by the children are currently on display in the small museum at Chishakwe.

Collaborations

Chishakwe has joined forces with the Lowveld Rhino Trust and African Wildlife Conservation Trust to include their specific materials in workshop sessions with teachers and to develop elements of the project for export to further schools around the Lowveld wildlife areas.

One of the tactics being used to protect rhino from persecution has been to educate local populations about rhino as a species. Chishakwe supports Lowveld Rhino Trust locally in this, as well as providing infrastructure and support to the trust’s ongoing anti-poaching personnel and efforts.

Chishakwe has housed the African Wildlife Conservation Trust since its inception as the Lowveld Wild Dog Project in 1996. Chishakwe now works with the trust to develop education resources for use in school communities in the South East Lowveld of Zimbabwe.

Beyond co-organizing World Rhino Day 2011, Chishakwe and Saving Rhinos LLC (that’s me) are making plans for educational and awareness-raising projects that will have both online and on-the-ground components.

Conservationists in Zimbabwe are fighting a hard battle on the ground with rhino horn syndicates who are well-equipped, very informed, and heavily funded through their lucrative illegal business.

Fortunately, there is a way you can help Zimbabwe’s conservation efforts.

Hands-on conservation project

The Chishakwe Volunteer Programme, a conservation project located in the vast and remote Save Valley Conservancy in the South East Lowveld of Zimbabwe, offers the opportunity to work with rhino scouts, as well as participate in other wildlife research and monitoring projects.

The activities can be quite varied. Volunteers may be doing data entry, filing camera trap photos, ground crewing on rhino ops, darting a dog, sitting in a blind at night, or using telemetry to track lion.

Chishakwe also runs a community outreach program, with an emphasis on environmental education. Community outreach volunteers could be painting a mural, designing materials, collecting and labeling specimens for the camp’s little museum or even presenting a session on a particular species.

Accommodation and meals are provided in a fully serviced, comfortable ranch style house set in a garden. There is a recreation area with a swimming pool for leisure time.

A very inspirational update from our partners in Nepal!

Rhino conservation efforts in Nepal received a big boost in awareness, thanks to the formation of “Eco-Clubs” in schools located in the Chitwan National Park Buffer Zone.

It was the team effort of our field liaisons at Partnership for Rhino Conservation (PARC/Nepal) working with the Chitwan National Park Buffer Zone Lothar User Committee that helped create Eco-Clubs at three different schools.

The goal of the Eco-Clubs is two-fold: 1) Creating conservation awareness at the local level, and 2) Taking a stand against illegal activities.

The future of conservation

The founder of PARC/Nepal, Suman Bhattarai, emphasizes the important role of children in the future of conservation.

Children are the drivers of the future. Without a doubt, responsibility of conservation will be in their hands. If we do not empower and sensitize them on time, there will be no continuity of conservation. It is of utmost importance for this generation to continue today’s success stories, and also to develop new approaches for conservation.

It is with children in mind that PARC/Nepal and the Chitwan NP Bufferzone Lothar User Committee approached local schools with the Eco-Club idea.

At first, local schools were visited to collect view of students and teachers to form eco-club in their schools. During this visits, students and teachers were notified about the importance clubs. This notification helped to draw interests of schools, teachers and students to form clubs.

The efforts paid off: Three schools in the Chitwan National Park Buffer Zone now have their own Eco-Clubs!

Eco-Club at Rastriya Secondary School, Manahari.

Phase I: Motivation

The Eco-Club formation was carried out in three phases. In the motivational first phase, students learned the basics.

What is an Eco-Club?

What are the objectives of an Eco-Club, and what does it do?

What are its working areas and key activities?

How can membership be provided to other interested students?

How does an eco-club make difference at local level?

How can the Eco-Club arrange resources for conducting activities?

What are conservation holidays and how can they be celebrated through an Eco-Club?

Eco-Club at Rastriya Lower Secondary School, Nayabasti.

Phase II: Formation

Once students had an understanding of the Eco-Club’s purpose and the opportunities it could provide, some of the club members stepped up to form the committee which would be responsible for organizing the ongoing activities and keeping the members engaged.

Eco-Club President (Rastriya Secondary School, Mahadevtar).

In addition, a teacher was nominated as the committee’s patron, while the corresponding school’s headmaster would serve in an advisory capacity.

Phase III: Responsibilities

Following the formation of the Eco-Club, the committee members immersed themselves in their new responsibilities. The committee President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer were given individual coaching in their roles by the project facilitators. For example, the Treasurer learned about keeping income and expenditure records.

Eco-Club Patron (Environment teacher – Rastriya Secondary School, Mahadevtar).

The committee also held brainstorming sessions to come up with innovative income-generating ideas.

Moving forward

There are currently three schools participating in the Eco-Club project:

Rastriya Secondary School, (Mahadevtar, Piple, Chitwan)

Rastriya Lower Secondary School, (Nayabasti, Piple, Chitwan)

Rastriya Secondary School, (Sunachuri, Manahari, Makawanpur)

Handing over the minutes book to Eco-Club Secretary.

To help the Eco-Clubs move forward, PARC/Nepal and the Chitwan NP Lothar User Committee committed to providing a small fund to the clubs for the first year.

Eco-Club impact

The Rastriya Lower Secondary School Eco-Club has already raised funds with a rhino conservation drama, performed by the club members. The schools also celebrated World Environment Day by holding a conservation song competition.

The Eco-Club project facilitators are Uttam Luitel, Deepa Paudel and Suman Bhattarai.

Greater one-horned rhinos in Nepal

One of the three Asian rhino species, greater one-horned rhinos (Rhinoceros unicornis) were once widespread throughout the northern floodplains and nearby foothills of the Indian sub-continent between Indo-Myanmar border in the east, and Sindh River basin, Pakistan in the west.

Nepal’s most recent rhino census found that the population of greater one-horned rhinos has increased to 534. The count was conducted in April 2011, and revealed an increase of 99 rhinos since the last count in 2008.

Chitwan National Park was found to have 503 rhinos, while 24 reside in Bardia National Park, and Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve holds seven of the precious pachyderms.

Today, the remaining 2,949 (includes the new census) greater one-horned rhinos are found only in a few protected areas in northeastern India and lowland Nepal.

Traditional medicine myths continue to threaten rhinos

Although the greater one-horned rhino population is steadily increasing, these rhinos remain under threat of being killed for their horn.

Despite the fact that extensive scientific analysis has confirmed that rhino horn has no medicinal value, myths and superstitions about rhino horn persist throughout China and Vietnam, where rhino horn is considered a key ingredient of traditional Chinese medicine.
