Despite the tragic news that South Africa’s rhino death toll reached 633 in mid-December 2012, the year actually marked extraordinary achievements in worldwide rhino conservation.

On Saturday, June 23rd, Sumatran rhino Ratu gave birth to her first calf, who has been named “Andatu”, meaning “Gift from God” in Bahasa, and also a combination of the name of his parents.
History has been made at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia, where Ratu has reportedly given birth to a healthy male calf!
Additional details have emerged regarding 30 of the 100-plus live rhinos exported to China from South Africa.
